Apps and Smartphones are on the incline; they are exceeding milestones previously set by themselves in earlier years. The time spent on mobile apps now exceeds half the time (51%) spent on all digital media. This is an 8 percent increase since May of last year. Time spent on media devices (smartphones and tablets) has now reached 60% up from last year’s 50%.
With the on-the-go, fast-paced lifestyle today the apps that are the most successful are the ones that have a primarily mobile presence and utility. Radio streaming giant, Pandora, and image sharing leader, Instagram, see about 96% of time spent on mobile for most consumers. Social networking too, which was once only existent on computer screens, is now seeing 71% of the interaction only on mobile devices. Mobile time spent on social media platforms is up 55% compared to the previous year. The mobile advertising industry now accounts for $7.1 billion out of the $42.8 billion online advertising market. As you might have expected, Facebook is the Number 1 app in terms of audience size and time spent using the application. All top lists for major mobile applications are dominated by 6 brands; Facebook, Google, Apple, Yahoo, Amazon, and eBay.
Newspaper ads and billboards no longer draw much attention to a generation that spends most of its time looking down on their smartphones and tablets. OnCampus Advertising is honing in on the shift to mobile platforms through our IP Targeting and Mobile ad strategies. Some of our capabilities include targeting Facebook newsfeeds of students from a specific college. This is a lot more efficient and cost effective than marketing to everyone in an area, hoping to reach some of the desired demographic. Moreover, we can target devices that fall within the virtual fence of a campus and push ads directly to their devices. Mobile and online advertising is one of the most efficient ways to get the attention of a generation that is always plugged in. What better location is there than to place your on the 5 inch billboards that we all carry in our pockets?
